About the motif
A dramatic composition inspired by the mastery of Dutch Baroque painting shows a sailing ship tossed by a rough sea amid dark, stormy clouds. Light falls intensely on figures struggling with the elements, pulling them out of darkness in a manner characteristic of Rembrandt — the chiaroscuro technique gives the scene depth and drama of almost theatrical power. Deep navy and anthracite tones of the sky and sea dominate, interrupted by golden and beige reflections of light on the sail and figures.
